History of Calag-itan
With the creation of our town Hinunangan many barrios near our town were developed and one of these was our own barrios of Calag-itan.
Our barrios was named right out from the ocular consideration of its physical features. As we looked carefully around our place we can see a particular difference with the physical features of the other barrios.
In the Southern portion of our shore adjacent to Barangay Calag-itan is a stony beach of smaller black hard stones called “Lag-it” which during low tide this place can’t be reached by sea water, so called Honasan. In this place different kind of shellfish are found that are good for food viand and in the Northern most portion of the shores lie the three capes “Pang-Pang”, “Gamay-Taliwa”, “Pang-Pang Dako”. They are solid block large projecting towards the sea. As we look at the sea dashing against them we can also see school of fish, the different fishes of different colors and shapes. This kind of rocks that abounds in this place is suggestive that this place must be named CALAG-ITAN. The joint surrounding Calag-itan River and the beach where there are no stones but only fine gray sand are found is named “ LOOK “. These are fishermen’s place their boats here because the sea is always mild and calm due to the protection of the capes from the Northerly winds during the months of November to March. The island of San Pablo and San Pedro help toward off the waves from the Pacific Ocean and the An-An Peninsula from the strong Southern Winds Habagat.
Had Mayor Fortunato Palanca correctly planned his project the wharf of Hinunangan which was built in the stone of Canipaan would have not turn in vain, if it was made in Calag-itan, where the former saromil was found.
The third subdivision near the three capes and the rocks beach of coral reefs is named “KANAWAYON “.
Approximately in the year 1875 there were many families living in Mamagan. The ones living there were the families of Paulo Ong-oy, Andres Masing, Romaldo Masing, Alejo Timbal, Sotero Fiel, and Faustino Masing.
In LOOK or CALAG-ITAN subdivision the families living there were Supriano Masing whose wife was Fabiana Masing whose age was believd to reached more than 100 years she superseded her daughter Tomasa Masing the donor of the land intended for school building but at present it is used as the Barangay compound where the stage, health center, and the cemented ties of seats.
This Suprian Masing, father of the donor of the Barangay public prepared a hard worker. He owned large land and he was the one that developed his own rice field and made irrigation ditch. Until now his descendants are the ones that made used to it.
